Alex runs Underwater Photography Workshops at the world’s best diving destinations each year. His workshops are more than just photography courses — they’re vibrant gatherings of enthusiasts brought together by a shared passion for capturing the wonders of the underwater world. Alex has run more than 150 underwater photography workshop weeks around the world over the last 25 years and there are many reasons they are so popular. First, Alex doesn’t just talk the talk, he’s been widely regarded as one of the world’s most innovative and successful underwater photographers for more than three decades. Alex is the inventor of many of techniques in underwater photography, and there is almost nobody else currently running underwater workshops who hasn’t themselves learned directly from Alex on his workshops, or from his books, articles or online teaching. Alex is renowned as a passionate and dedicated teacher. He is known for his detailed understanding of underwater photography techniques, camera gear, destinations and marine life, helping guests create truly memorable images. He is famous for his work ethic, ensuring every day on his workshops are as productive as possible.
Alex carefully chooses the best dive operations and every trip makes use of his understanding of the ocean (a marine ecology PhD and decades of experience) to help get the optimum photographic conditions and opportunities. Also Alex’s openness encourages a sharing atmosphere. He hopes that everyone will not just learn from him, but also from the camaraderie and knowledge of a friendly, sharing group. And finally Alex isn’t a paid ambassador or dealer for any photographic equipment and is known both for giving honest advice and being welcoming to all, whatever gear or brands you shoot. These are some of the reasons why his workshops are consistently oversubscribed, almost always within hours of being released.
Finally, while Alex decides when and where to travel his workshops are usually put together by a professional travel businesses. Given their popularity, to give everyone an equal chance to book, events are announced and opened for bookings via an announcement in Alex’s email newsletter that is sent to everyone simultaneously (sign up at the bottom of this page). There is no minimum camera requirement for Alex’s workshops, although they are aimed at enthusiastic underwater photographers who want to make the most of their time in the field. Alex does not announce his workshops on social media. “I don’t want people joining my workshops because they want to meet a big name. I want workshops filled with people who are passionate enough about their photography to do some research to find the best events. Most of my workshops are filled with repeaters, and with people who’ve been recommended by friends, which greatly improves the workshop, creating a positive community learning atmosphere. I learn something on every workshop I run!”
Alex’s workshops are not always announce workshops in chronological order. Alex says “We book resorts and liveaboards many years in advance to ensure I am in the best places, with the best operators at the best time. But since I am confident that my trips will fill, I do not need to launch these trips until closer to the time. I try to launch my trips at sensible time before they will run. For the biggest trips this maybe more than 18 months in advance, while annual workshops often launch about 10 months in advance. My workshops are popular and usually fill shortly after I send out the announcement in my newsletter. If there is a trip you really fancy, it is really worth contacting the travel agent and getting on the waiting list, as spaces do open up when people’s plans change. All my liveaboard workshops are full boat charters, but I usually run boats a little below its normal capacity, for a superior experience both on board and underwater.”
