Alex Mustard’s classic summer Red Sea Workshop has a must-do status amongst many underwater photographers. It is a week of intensive underwater photography in the Red Sea taking in vibrant Red Sea reefs, world class ship wrecks and importantly, also timed to catch gatherings of great schools of fish in the Ras Mohammed National Park, all with expert insight, knowledge and tutorage from Alex. This is workshop that gets you lots of time in the best spots at the best times and with the freedom needed to create images.

Alex says “I run this trip every year because it is a great location for teaching underwater photography and because we just get so much quality diving and photography packed into each day, no other trip is as productive. It is diverse too, with the wide mix of subjects and the lessons that they teach us. And despite travel getting more expensive, Egypt still offers very strong value for money. Lots of people choose this to be their first trip with me, while many others return year after year because the trip produces so many different images.” You can read a detailed overview of Alex’s Red Sea Workshops here.

2024 will be our second year on Ghazala Explorer one of the newest liveaboards in the Red Sea, operated by the Ocean Tribe Fleet. The boat and its dedicated crew was a very popular addition to these workshops amongst the 2023 guests. Alex adding “Ghazala Explorer is steel-hulled making her very roll very little compared with the wooden boats. In fact in the last workshops we actually did presentations on the Gulf crossings, which I’ve never wanted to do before. She is fast, meaning we arrive everywhere early and the boat has two new compressors meaning tanks and filled and ready for when we’re chasing the light or the subjects. She has a very spacious saloon area, perfect for talks, processing and camera fettling – there is plenty of space everywhere for my groups and all our gear! But the standout feature is the whole crew, who work so hard to make these workshops special.” This workshop is limited to 20 photographers, although the boat can take 24.

Please note that there are two weeks available. The diving and teaching is intended to be the same each week, although it always varies with conditions and how the sites are performing photographically. “I recommend that people book just one week, to give more people a chance to get places on this popular workshop,” says Alex. “The teaching content focuses on the subjects we are shooting (wreck externals, wreck internals, schooling fish, reefs scenery, split levels and fish photography and hopefully dolphins), although it does vary a little on each workshop depending on the dives we do, the interests of the group and the questions I am asked.”
