A before (left) and after (right) photo of a colony of pilar coral (Dendrogyra cylindrus) which was killed by Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease over the period of a week in 2021. A couple of uninfected fragments of this coral were saved and taken to a coral nursery, where they are still growing. These photos were taken a few years apart. STCLD kills corals very rapidly and leave characteristic skeletons acorss the reef, which preserve all the detail of the original colonies, because they are killed quickly so detail is not yet eroded away. East End, Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands, British West Indies. Caribbean Sea.
