These gregarious tube blennies tend to occupy old wormholes in the coral and form small colonies with a strict social hierarchy. The larger dominant males occupy the most spacious worm tubes and prefer holes highest up in the colony, where they have the easiest access to their planktonic food. The Indo-Pacific lionfish are an invasive species on Caribbean reefs and free from natural predators thrive at much higher population densities than on their native reefs. As efficient predators of reef fish, they exert a large predation pressure potentially greatly reducing the numbers of many native reef fish species. As a result they are culled by licenced divers and their fillets sold to restaurants, which are popular eating and in return reduces fishing pressure on native species.
