A threespot damselfish (Stegastes planifrons) aggressively defends its garden of algae. There is little space for plant growth on reefs, so competition for food is fierce. By pecking back the corals and cropping their algae to just the right length, plant growth in the damselfish's garden is 7 times that on the surrounding reef. Georgetown, Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands, British West Indies. Caribbean Sea.
