Hitchhiker. Canada
A amphipod hitchhikes on a sea goosebury. Browning Pass, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. North East Pacific Ocean.
Callum Roberts caption: A hyperiid amphipod, a type of crustacean related to beach sandhoppers, hitchhikes on a sea gooseberry (ctenophore). These amphipods quit the seabed long ago in their evolutionary history and have become space travellers in the planktonic galaxy. They ride jellyfish asteroids through the void, feeding on them, mating and giving birth on these tiny worlds. Females brood their young in a belly pouch and when they come close enough to the right kind of jellyfish floating by, they deposit their young there and wish them luck before they disappear for ever on journeys of their own.
