Lionfish In The Sky Without Diamonds. Indonesia
A dwarf lionfish (Dendrochyrus brachypterus) opens its ‘wings’ (in fact enlarged pectoral fins) as it flits across a small gap of open water. This species generally lives on the seabed and favours coastal reefs. It also seems particularly drawn to manmade structures in the shallows and is common around jetties. I was able to get this unusual underneath view of this lionfish as it swam between two pylons of an artificial reef in shallow water – they are just out of frame on either side. The beautiful background in this photo does not come from the water, which was a murky grey, but from the blue sky. Seraya, Tulamben area, Bali, Indonesia. Java Sea.
