A pair of yellowbelly hamlets (Hypoplectrus aberrans) spawning at dusk in open water above a coral reef. Hamlets are one of the few vertebrate species that are true hermaphrodites, here the fish in the foreground is acting as a male, but this pair had spawned minutes earlier with the roles reversed. The fish acting as a male in this picture may be a shy hamlet/yellowbelly hamlet hybrid (the female, behind, was a pure yellowbelly hamlet). George Town, Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands, British West Indies. Caribbean Sea.
