FULLY BOOKED. \nAlex Mustard and Erin Quigley underwater imaging workshop at Misool Resort\, Raja Ampat\, Indonesia. \nContact Caroline@scubatravel.com for further information and waitlist places. \nScuba Travel is proud to announce the ultimate underwater photography event (probably): the combination of the incredible Misool Resort\, Raja Ampat\, staying for their longest package (12N in resort) at the peak time of year\, with a workshop taught by Alex and Erin. \n \nAlex says “we’ve done this once before and it was definitely a high-water mark on my workshops. But I am very excited about this event and want to tell you everything! It is hard to think of a more perfect dive destination than Misool Resort\, an idyllic resort in the world’s most incredible reef diving location. Whenever I have agreed to run workshops there\, I have always insisted that they are a step above and I am very excited that I am teaming up with Erin Quigley of Go Ask Erin fame! I am certain Erin needs little introduction\, but suffice to say she is globally recognised as THE leading expert and teacher for post processing underwater images (as well as taking fantastic photos herself and being a great teacher of in-water techniques too). Erin is generous and a natural teacher\, who loves sharing her knowledge\, making complexity of processing incredibly straightforward and simply helping others. This will be my fifth trip with Erin\, and our second time jointly hosting an event at Misool. Last time was truly spectacular with stunning reefs and mantas upon mantas\, we’re so excited to be going back.” \n \nMISOOL RESORT \nAlthough very remote\, Misool Resort lies at the heart of the world’s most spectacular coral reef habitat. The resort elegantly balances luxury (there are 4 staff to each guest) with active environmental protection to create an unforgettable and adventurous holiday experience in a truly unique destination. Take some time to look through the Misool website to appreciate this is no ordinary destination and resort: the island\, the food\, the rooms\, the diving…. It is no surprise that the resort is fully booked years in advance. Watch the video below to understand why this place is so\, so special: \n\n“Misool is a paradise\,” says Alex. “Lush coral reefs grow right beneath the rooms\, green turtles aggregate right off the beach\, reef sharks swim beneath the wooden walkways and huge schools and colourful blooms of soft coral gather just beneath the dock. On one visit we found 18 pygmy seahorses on the house reef. The island also has its own manta cleaning station\, flasher wrasse spawning spots and within minutes there are some of the most famous dives in Raja Ampat. And rather than diving them with a liveaboard load of dive buddies\, Misool runs small boats and even smaller groups\, ensuring you dive some of the world’s best reefs in a very exclusive way.  It is a place to immerse yourself in nature and in your photography. This is also an incredible place to stay\, and since the resort usually attracts a lot of non-divers\, it is common that people bring non-diving partners on this one\, as there are plenty of staff and experiences for them to enjoy while we are out snapping.” \n \n  \nPROTECTED PARADISE \nAlex continues “I first visited the Misool reefs in 2006\, before the resort had been built and it was obvious that these were the best hard coral\, best soft coral and fishiest reefs I had ever seen. What is perhaps even more remarkable is\, that returning there down the years\, the diving actually is better today. Many new dive sites have been discovered and we now know of a lot more manta cleaning stations (I can name 10 different manta cleaning sites close to the resort and I know the guides know more than me!). Above all there are a lot more fish\, a lot more turtles and a lot more rays and sharks. Species we’re used to witnessing vanishing from the oceans are blossoming here. It is very uplifting place to see.” \nWhat’s the secret formula? There’s no magic trick\, just sound marine conservation. Misool really is an ecologically minded resort – a 300\,000 acre marine protected area is an integral part of the resort and is funded and staffed because we visit. Scientific studies have measured a 250% average increase in the amount of fish inside the reserve over a 6-year period and by 2018 there were 25 times more sharks here than when I first visited. And the biomass is still growing.” By visiting Misool Resort you will be directly contributing to the Misool Foundation and supporting this work. \n \nTHE DIVING \nRaja Ampat has some of the most spectacular reef diving in the world. Diverse and dense gardens of hard corals\, walls stuffed with gaudy soft corals and fans\, tonnes of bright reef fish and a water column filled with schools. On top of this there are loads of turtles\, sharks\, manta rays and more. There is even a jellyfish lake. This trip is timed in January/February which can hopefully bring us the very best conditions\, with baitfish\, mantas\, sunshine and good visibility adding to this amazing destination. The trip is also over Alex’s birthday (the real one\, not the fake one he’s having on each trip in 2025). \nAlex adds “although the resort is surrounded by famous dive sites\, the ability to do easy house reef dives has been incredibly popular on our previous trips. It is such a privilege to be able to dive repeatedly and at your own convenience in this area. Getting to know a site and repeating it gives such a different perspective and imagery. We usually do three boat dives out on the celebrity sites and then one on the house reef. There is also excellent split level photography possible when snorkelling. On previous trips\, folks have also loved shooting as very small groups of photographers\, as we spread across all the boats and visit different sites. It is usual on liveaboards in Raja Ampat for the whole group to dive the same site\, while in Misool Resort we’re able to visit those same famous places with just a handful of people in the water. The small dive group size also means we can visit incredibly rich\, compact pinnacles that liveaboards groups just can’t fit on. And of course\, the resort has the local knowledge and dozens of dive sites that nobody else visits.” \n \nTHE WORKSHOP \nAlex and Erin will naturally divide the teaching of the workshop into their well-known areas of expertise. Alex presenting the main teaching on underwater technique and Erin sharing her mastery of post processing techniques. Alex will generally run the evening sessions that will take place in the dining room at the end of dinner\, with talks on shooting techniques and tips for working with specific subjects (Erin will sometimes guest too)\, which will blend increasingly into review sessions as the workshop continues. While Erin will run her late-afternoon “Office Hour” (aka “Happy Hour” as refreshments are often widely enjoyed) in the Hive\, giving you the chance to get those golden processing tips on your images (in time for image review!). Alex will also be on duty in the camera room – as your first point of contact for any gear related problems. Misool is a wonderful place to indulge in creating sensational images and the workshop is focused on enhancing this. The conditions will be highly suitable for wide angle and this will be a major focus. But there is also excellent fish photography and macro. \nSince we take over the whole of the resort\, Caroline from Scuba Travel will also be on location to help in looking after everyone\, taking care of the logistics and providing an extra point of contact. \n \nBOOKING INFO \nThis trip is being organised by Scuba Travel\, UK\, who organise most of Alex’s workshop trips. For reservations and further information\, please email Caroline@scubatravel.com (noting that they mainly work UK office hours for replies). OPEN. \nPlease contact Caroline@scubatravel.com for more information and reservations. \nThailand’s Andaman Sea: underwater photography workshop exploring the lush reefs and big animals of Richelieu Rock\, Koh Tachai\, Surin & Similan Islands by liveaboard. \nThailand’s Andaman Sea offers an exotic mix between the high biodiversity of Southeast Asia coral reefs and the richness of the tropical Indian Ocean. These picturesque reefs are packed with colourful soft corals\, sea fans and fish\, there are endemics like the Andaman anemone fish and unusual nudibranchs\, and big animals like mantas and whale sharks. In short it is an excellent destination for producing standout underwater photographs – the aim of this workshop. \n \n“Although I’ve not been to Thailand for long time\, the reefs of the Andaman Sea remain some of the most beautiful I’ve photographed\,” commented Alex. “And I saw first ever whale shark at Richelieu Rock\, so I am very excited to be headed back. This trip is timed for mid-March\, firmly in the NE monsoon\, which brings sunny weather\, calm seas and the best visibility to the region. For those that join some of my higher end trips\, do note that Thailand is lower priced destination compared with many we visit in Asia\, so you can expect more other divers in the water and less sumptuous accommodations than we usually experience in the leading resorts and liveaboards in Indonesia\, for example. Although we will be enjoying fantastic Thai food!” \nThe workshop will focus on the dive sites around Richelieu Rock\, Koh Tachai\, the Surin and Similan Islands. The trip is based on the experienced and well-run MV Bavaria liveaboard (28m\, purpose build\, steel-hulled)\, which Scuba Travel has chartered for an extended 7 night\, 26 dive\, itinerary (typical trips are 3 or 6 night). We’re running the workshop with a reduced number of divers onboard (16 plus Alex\, the boat usually takes 24 divers) for smaller dive groups underwater and more space on board. \n \nThailand’s Andaman Sea offers spectacular and diverse photography. Richelieu Rock is often hailed as the crown jewel of the Andaman Sea\, due to its extraordinary biodiversity\, vibrant purple soft corals\, and the chance to encounter both large pelagic species like whale sharks and manta rays\, as well as rare macro marine life. The site is a horseshoe-shaped pinnacle that emerges only at low tide and extends down to 40 metres. The site can experience strong currents\, but that brings life\, lots of life. Richelieu Rock is fantastic for both wide angle and macro\, offering encounters with large schools of barracuda\, trevallies\, tuna\, large cuttlefish and a wealth of smaller creatures such as ghost pipefish\, harlequin shrimp\, tiger-tail seahorses\, nudibranchs\, and frogfish. With so much to shoot\, we plan to be based for around half the trip at this spot. \n \nThe Similan Islands are another gem that make Thailand a world-class photo destination. With crystal-clear waters\, granite boulders\, and flourishing coral gardens\, the Similans offer stunning and easy conditions for photography. These reefs are characterised by lush soft corals\, attractive sea fans\, baitfish\, reef octopus and bigger creatures like turtles and leopard (zebra) sharks. On one previous trip Alex made over 30 dives on just one dive site here\, never tiring of the subject matter! Ko Tachai\, by contrast\, typically experiences stronger currents\, and is the top spot for big animals and schools. While the less visited sites of the Surin Islands are MV Bavaria’s speciality with a wealth of stunning spots combined with far fewer other divers. \n \nThe trip will be fully focused on photography with diving biased to the daytime and Alex running his teaching sessions each evening. The workshop will focus on the techniques relevant to the subjects we are seeing\, such a the stunning scenery\, big animal encounters\, schooling fish and macro portraits. Alex will also run image review sessions during the workshop. \n \nVITALS \nDates: 9th March-17th March 2027 (Phuket-Phuket) \nFrom £2650 GBP\, depending on cabin options (more below). We hope that you will join this unique collaborative workshop with Alex Mustard and Marty Snyderman for this very special Macro Masterclass\, at the fantastic Atlantis Dive Resort in Dumaguete. I have done many dives here with more that 10 frogfish on the dive (my record is 14\, although a friend claims he counted 40 on one amazing dive). Most of the dive sites are in locally enforced no-take reserves and are filled with normal reef life too. It is my favourite spot anywhere to photograph clownfish\, and it is possible to see 7 different species on a single dive here. Oh\, and it is renowned for large photogenic nudibranch\, seahorses\, skeleton shrimps and more.” \n \n“I am also really delighted that Marty Snyderman invited me to run this event with him\,” says Alex. “I’ve been reading Marty’s articles\, books and wowing at his photos for pretty much my entire life and I am very excited by what he’ll bring to this workshop group. Alex Mustard and Nick More agreed to join forces for three workshops in Lembeh in 2025\, 2026 and this one in 2027. So this is your last chance (for a while\, at least) to join this exciting and unique macro photography workshop at the enchanting Lembeh Resort\, in North Sulawesi\, Indonesia. “Stay in paradise\, while diving in paradise\,” says Nick. Nick and Alex don’t take it in turns to teach\, but run their programs at the same time so you get two workshops on one trip! \nINTRODUCTION \nThe Lembeh Strait is one of the world’s most celebrated dive destinations\, this 10 mile long sliver of sea is less than a mile wide\, constrained between the forested volcanic landscape of Lembeh Island and North Sulawesi\, is home to 70+ dive sites. However\, despite its fame and popularity\, it is important to stress (if you’ve not been before) that Lembeh is not a classic white-sand beach and blue-water coral reef destination. This is the world’s most famous spot for muck diving\, where beautiful reefscapes and clear water are not the priority – people return again and again to Lembeh because of the amazing critters. A-list animals such as painted frogfish\, flamboyant cuttlefish\, coconut octopus\, hairy frogfish\, pygmy seahorses\, thorny seahorse\, mimic octopus\, blue-ring octopuses and many more are seen daily – making this arguably the world’s most productive destination for underwater photography. \n\n		\n		\n			\n				\n			\n			\n				\n			\n			\n				\n			\n			\n				\n			\n			\n				\n			\n			\n				\n			\n			\n				\n			\n			\n				\n			\n			\n				\n			\n			\n				\n			\n			\n				\n			\n			\n				\n			\n			\n				\n			\n			\n				\n			\n			\n				\n			\n		\n\n“It is a pleasure to be running another Lembeh workshop with Nick\,” said Alex. “He massively enhances to the learning experience with his ‘Dive With Nick’\, personal tuition approach\, inspired by how Martin Edge taught underwater photography. And of course Nick is one of the world’s most successful macro shooters – his shots from Indonesia have been awarded in all the top underwater photography contests\, as well as in the major WPY and GDT nature photography competitions\, something I don’t think anyone else can claim with all different images. He’s a Lembeh expert\, having stayed at Lembeh Resort more than a dozen times\, and it is always inspiring to see up close the images he produces in these waters.” \n “More Mustard is no ordinary photography workshop\,” continued Alex. “I am happy to go on record saying the last one was the best macro workshop I have run. The extended stay allows us to cover so much quality content and with the two of us teaching it in different styles it really helps people get special shots. To give you an idea of scale: during the 2025 event\, for example\, I gave 24 presentations\, while Nick focused on 1:1 teaching and ran 33 Dive With Nick sessions during that event\, passing on tips\, technique and personal coaching directly to attendees. I’ve been running workshops in Lembeh for 20 years\, but at 12 nights\, this package is the longest workshop I have ever offered\, with the most diving\, the most spotters\, the most teaching\, the most photography. It is a real chance to indulge yourself. Yes\, a longer workshop with lots of diving costs more than a shorter one\, but with the increased costs of flying\, I feel longer trips make more sense and are more cost effective per dive\, even more so when considering the door-to-door cost. During the 2025 workshop our group logged 1159 dives across 41 dive sites with 562 species of critters photographed (and many other normal species too)\, including blue ring octopus on 6 days and hairy octopus on 4 different sites.” \n \nDIVING DETAILS \nLembeh Resort is one of the world’s best dive resorts. I know that all our guests will be warmly welcomed and fantastically looked after individually. All the staff are so happy to have you staying with them and there is plenty of flexibility to personalise many aspects of your experience. On the diving side this means that each evening there is the choice between: a house reef dive\, or going out on the boats for a standard night dive\, a dusk dive\, a mandarinfish dive\, and blackwater and bonfire dives\, all with the expert guides. Lembeh Resort is also home to the Backscatter Photo Centre\, which hopefully you won’t need\, but a massive reassurance if you experience have any camera gremlins\, need spares\, require some parts 3D printed (like a zoom gear or beam restrictors) or even want to hire an accessory like a Miniflash Snoot combo. The 12 Night workshop is available with two different dive packages: you can book either a 32 dive or the unlimited dive package. If you get the 32\, you can of course add any extra dives you want in resort. The unlimited package is a special package price that Lembeh Resort only offers workshop bookings. \n \nAll dives will always be with the expert guides from Critters@Lembeh dive centre\, with one guide to each pair of photographers. During the workshop photographers cannot book private guides (except if needed for safety reasons). Guides are rotated every 2 days\, meaning you should dive with 6 different guides through your stay. The workshop spots are open to non-photographers (if you come with a non-photographer partner\, you will essentially have a private photo guide)\, and we can also accommodate non-divers (at a significantly reduced price – ask Caroline – although please note that Lembeh is very much a diving destination). The group will be split across multiple boats\, there will usually be between 4 and 6 photographers per boat. Alex works with Opo and the team at the Dive Centre to select the best dive sites for all the boats throughout the trip. \n“The diving philosophy for this workshop is focused on photographic productivity\,” said Alex. “I believe our team approach is far better than coming on your own\, or even having your own private guide and boat. We take over the whole resort and my strategy is to put lots of guides into the Strait. Your guide will be there to work with you and your buddy\, but they will also communicate with the other guides. More guides means more sightings\, the approach turns a good dive site into a great one\, a great one into a mind-blowing one! When people have an excellent dive\, I make sure I send another of our boats there on the next dive\, and get the guides to exchange notes\, so the next group finds even more subjects. It is one of the biggest advantages of taking over the whole resort – we dive in small groups\, but benefit greatly from knowing what everyone else is seeing. \n\nThe video above gives you a flavour with a peak behind the scenes of the 2025 event (apologies that you can’t hear people speaking the original music Lembeh Resort used gets muted on YouTube). If you have not travelled to Lembeh before\, it is one of the easiest destinations to reach in Indonesia. Most guests arrive on the direct 3 hour flight from Singapore\, landing at the small Manado airport\, where you are met by Lembeh Resort staff and then it is just 45 minutes by car to the Lembeh Strait. You can also fly easily through Jakarta\, but this is a longer route for most people. The workshop package also includes the transfers from Manado airport\, as well as Nitrox\, laundry throughout\, 1 hour spa treatment etc. \nMORE ON THE WORKSHOP \nAlex’s workshop teaching will focus on the techniques of macro and critter photography. The lectures are not random talks\, but are planned as a complete course on this style of photography\, starting with fundamentals such as gear selection and optimisation\, covering essential macro techniques\, then discussing standout high quality and creative lighting techniques\, wide angle macro\, while Nick will revisit similar themes\, or whatever you want in his 1:1 sessions – on the last workshop he often focused on long-exposure dancing sweetlips shots because that subject was notably abundant. \n \nAlex typically gives technique lectures are each morning as people are finishing up breakfast to provide you with the advice and ideas you need just before you go diving. While\, in the evenings\, after dinner\, Alex runs image review sessions\, to analyse the strengths and areas for improvement in the day’s images. These also provide a great chance to see what others have produced and get inspiration and suggestions for the next day. Nick will be joining buddy teams throughout the workshop\, shooting the same subjects as you will and then comparing shots later on the laptop\, so he can pass on his tips and coaching more individually. \n“Mindset and strategy are integral to unlocking the photographic potential of Lembeh\,” says Nick. “The ‘A’ list critters are in abundance\, but sometimes the truly special photographs originate in opportunities with more regularly species. Recognising potential even in a less glamorous subject is key. Remember there is always something to shoot in Lembeh.
