|Below are a
set of images taken during Hurricane Ivan in Grand Cayman between 11th
& 14th September 2004.
You can help the people of the Cayman Islands recover from the aftermath of the hurricane by following this link:
These photographs, taken by Alexander Mustard, Richard Read, Marc Pilgrem and Stephen Broadbelt, are presented chronologically. They include pictures in our hurricane shelter - the Gun Bay Civic Centre, as well as pictures of the damage to the East End's resorts and villages, and also a few pictures taken as we drove back to the west side of the island, and finally when we got off the island by private jet on Tuesday evening.
We are all extremely grateful to the Caymanians who welcomed us with their hospitality, and took time to look after us so well during such stressful times. And we look forward to visiting the islands again soon, and helpling their important tourism industry get back to normal.
More than one week after the storm, most people on the islands still do have water, electricity and telephone lines. Food and water are scarce and rationed. International aid has been very slow to arrive - partly because there has been so little news about the hurricane because the international media has not been on the island (I will not speculate on the reasons here).
Everyone I know in the Tourism industry on the island seems dedicated to get it up and running as soon as possible (despite not having water, power or phone lines at the moment) - before the end of the year. Once the tourism is open for business, please consider Cayman as a destination again - your business will help the island get back on its feet again.
But in the short term please consider helping in any way that you can.
